Brodie’s Books

Isla Stewart and Njabulo Dlova are bookshop own-ers from Edinburgh, Scotland. They have been run-ning their online bookshop, Brodie’s Books since 2008, the past 15 years. Their shop’s name is derived from one of the most famous Scottish fictional characters, Jean Brodie, a character from the book The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark.

They want to build a community around their bookstore by dedicating a portion of the shop to operate as a coffee shop, selling their own brewed coffee. From here, customers will sitting down and discuss books while enjoying coffee. They want the shop to become a tourist attraction and haven for book lovers, momentarily escaping from the hustle and bustle of the Royal Mile.

The main focus still on rare collectable books, the coffee is simply a side product to make the business unique and stand out from the competition.

Logo Design

Brodie’s Books is from Scotland, the unicorn representing Scotland was believed to be the strongest of all animals – wild and untamed. Since around the 1200s, the word unicorn has gone on to name “a person or thing that is rare and highly valued”. This is very suitable for the business concept of Brodie’s Books – Rare Collectables and easily recognizable symbol that stands out among other competitors.

Most people don’t know who Jean Brodie is, but every-one knows the unicorn.

This is Brand Positioning Statement for them: To those who love special books, Brodie’s Books is a heaven to explore this passion and meet like-minded people, by providing an comfort-able atmosphere where you can enjoy a rare book along with a good cup of homemade coffee.
